For decades Lopez Island animals were cared for by Dr. Jerry Scherzinger. He welcomed all domestic animals – he even took in turtles and chickens! We on Lopez owe him a huge debt of gratitude and miss him terribly. But he has retired now and it’s time for us to try to fill the hole his departure has created.
So now what? Many Islanders have turned to Lopez Animal Protection Society (LAPS) for help and at the same time they are asking LAPS to “fix” it. They want to know if we can get another veterinarian to come to Lopez as soon as possible – they need vet care and answers. We all do. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit, it’s not in the LAPS authority or mission statement to recruit or hire a veterinarian, but we are looking for a way to fill the gap.
With the cooperation and support of the building owner, Lauren Stevens, LAPS has stepped up on faith and is renting Dr. Jerry’s former clinic space until the end of the year. The goal is to provide a means and a ready space for a new vet or even a “mobile” vet to set up a practice here. We are actively networking all leads for veterinarian services, including contacts with Guardian Veterinarian Hospital, a new vet clinic opening in Friday Harbor, as well as others.
Our decision to maintain the clinic facility is a challenging one, as the expense is significant. We need your help to keep the former vet clinic available for potential veterinarians. Please go to our website www.lopezanimals.org, to the HELP page to learn how to make a donation. Or mail a check to LAPS, PO Box 474, Lopez Island, WA 98261. A donation of any amount will be much appreciated.
We are in this together!
Thank you for your continuing support,
